New year – New Project
In January, a new project was launched at SeeSat e.V. - SEEROC (SeeSat Rocketry). The project aims to offer students the opportunity to actively work on the development of rockets.
How did this project come about?
The idea for SeeRoc came about on the initiative of Levin Schatz, who launched the project as a dedicated leader. With the aim of giving students access to practical rocket building, he presented his concept to SeeSat e.V. - and was met with great enthusiasm. The association decided to support the project under its umbrella and provided the organizational framework for its implementation. The starting signal was given on January 9, 2025: A highly motivated team of 20 students, supported by Prof. Markus Grieb and Constantin Winter (DHBW Ravensburg), formed at a kick-off meeting. Together, they laid the foundations for an ambitious goal - to build their own rocket.
What goal is being pursued?
The project has a clear goal: the independent planning, development and construction of a solid-fuel rocket that can be used in student competitions. A first milestone is participation in the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC) , a renowned rocketry competition for student teams. The aim is for the rocket to reach a specified altitude as precisely as possible - initially in the 3-km category and later in the more demanding 9-km class. The SeeRoc team is developing a passively controlled experimental rocket with solid fuel propulsion that meets all the safety and technical requirements of the EuRoC. The project covers all phases of rocket construction - from conception, design and production through to testing and documentation.
A long-term approach:
SeeRoc has pursued a long-term and sustainable approach right from the start. The structures developed, the accumulated knowledge and the technical infrastructure are designed in such a way that future teams can seamlessly build on the project. In close cooperation with the DHBW Ravensburg, Friedrichshafen campus, a permanent student rocket program is to be developed and a specialized rocket department established within SeeSat e.V.. Through cooperation with industry and research partners, students will gain practical experience in rocket construction. They combine the knowledge they have acquired at the university in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and software development with real-life challenges in an interdisciplinary environment. The current project period is scheduled to run until December 31, 2026 - after which it will be handed over to a new team. In the future, SeeRoc would like to develop its own rockets with higher flight altitudes and more complex propulsion systems in order to continuously develop its technology and expertise.
